Leeds United employee tips Joe Gelhardt for new role after Jesse Marsch reveal
Noel Whelan has claimed Joe Gelhardt could star in a “number 10 role” for Leeds United if Jesse Marsch wants to start him alongside Patrick Bamford.
The former Whites striker and club ambassador was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 20-year-old’s fledgling relationship with the former Middlesbrough ace.
As quoted by Leeds Live (7 September), Marsch revealed the “really good relationship” between Gelhardt and Bamford – claiming the England international has taken the youngster “under his wing”.
The Leeds United boss has previously hinted at starting the duo as a strike partnership.
Bamford has made two league starts this term after recovering from a string of injury problems, while Gelhardt started the Whites’ last top-flight match against Brentford (3 September).
Whelan claimed playing the two forwards together would “pose a lot of problems for opposition teams going forward”.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I wouldn’t like to see Gelhardt out wide.
“I’d much prefer him to play as a number 10, in behind Patrick – if the two of them are to play together.
“They’ve not had much time to play in the same side with the injuries to Bamford.
“I think it could be that Gelhardt plays in that 10 role and links up play with the wide men and supports Bamford.
“That would work very well, for me, and pose a lot of problems for opposition teams going forward.”
Leeds United sit ninth in the Premier League after six games.
The Whites next face off against Aston Villa on 2 October.
