Leeds United favourite issues verdict on Joe Gelhardt freezing out Patrick Bamford

Danny Mills has claimed Joe Gelhardt is not ready to start for Leeds United in the Premier League despite making a “fantastic impression” during his breakthrough season.

The former Whites defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old has to become a “more consistent, well-rounded player” in order to be effective for 90 minutes.

Gelhardt claimed his fourth assist of the season with a “Messi-like” effort in the final moments of the 1-1 draw against Brighton on Sunday (15 May).

The former Wigan youngster has also netted two league goals this term.

He has made just four starts in the top flight.

Mills claimed Gelhardt has “a lot of hard work” ahead if he is to challenge Patrick Bamford for a starting berth.

“Sometimes players like him come on and are fantastic impact subs,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“The energy, the dynamism, everything he brings to the game is perfect for when players are tired.

“We’ve seen him make a fantastic impression when there is perhaps a little bit of fatigue out there, both mentally and physically.

“But can he do that from the start? It’s different pressures and different expectations.

“He’s revelling in the freedom of being brought on when Leeds are chasing a goal. He can go out and express himself.

“He’s a fantastic talent with lots of ability. But it’s just turning these moments into a more consistent, well-rounded player who can play 90 minutes.

“That transition is not quite as easy as some people think. It’s going to take a lot of hard work.”

Leeds United sit 18th ahead of the final day (22 May).

The Whites, who play Brentford away, must better Burnley’s result to survive relegation.
