Jean-Kevin Augustin is in excellent physical condition and getting closer to the fitness levels insisted at Leeds United by Marcelo Bielsa, Football Insider understands.
The striker, 22, has done extensive training with United’s conditioning staff away from the main squad since joining from RB Leipzig last month.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Augustin is in “excellent nick” and making rapid progress to reaching the level Bielsa demands of all first team starters.
He is said to be showing great enthusiasm and willingness to commit to the hard yards at the club’s Thorp Arch headquarters.
Bielsa revealed a week ago that Augustin was some way short of the fitness levels required to play for Leeds.
He has come off the bench in the last two games against Brentford, on Tuesday night, and Nottingham Forest, last Saturday, after sitting out the first two matches following his arrival.
But French forward is set to be a substitute once again on Saturday in the Elland Road clash against Bristol City.
Bielsa revealed at his media conference today that Patrick Bamford would once again lead the attack, with Augustin held back in reserve.
Augustin joined Leeds in the final week of the January window on an initial loan after his season-long loan to Monaco was cancelled at the halfway point.
The agreement United have with Leipzig is an obligation to pay a further £18m on top of the £2m loan fee if they go up to the Premier League.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to announce a blockbuster deal this month after extensive negotiations.
