Whelan: James 'perfect' for Leeds after what I saw in person v Liverpool

Dan James is “perfect” for Leeds United and gave a good account of himself in Sunday’s “really difficult” defeat to Liverpool.

So says Leeds ambassador Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 3-0 loss at Elland Road.

James, who signed from Man United for £25million on deadline day, was substituted in with 22 minutes remaining.

Few of Marcelo Bielsa’s attacking players had any joy in a game dominate by Jurgen Klopp’s men.

But Whelan saw glimpses of real promise in Wales international James when he watched the action unfold in person in West Yorkshire.

“He came into really tough circumstances in the game,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“We were fighting to get back into it and were down to 10 men, so it wasn’t the ideal circumstances to make your debut.

“But the glimpses we saw of him, he has good feet, good link-up play, he’s good at cutting inside. He is a top player all round.

“It was everything that we expected, that he showed at Man United during the time he was there.

“He looks like the type of player who will be perfect for Elland Road. He ticks a lot of the boxes that will make us a better team this season.

“We do play very direct and down the wings and the cut inside to link up with Patrick Bamford.”

James signed for Leeds on a five-year deal.

He spent two full seasons at Man United, where he scored nine goals in 74 appearances.
