Noel Whelan has slammed the “terrible” body language of Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla and claimed he’s an “accident waiting to happen”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the team are losing faith in the 33-year-old after months of shaky displays and glaring errors.
A section of Leeds supporters have been calling for Casilla to be axed and replaced in goal by his teenage deputy Ilian Meslier.
The former Real Madrid keeper conceded another two goals in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest as Marcelo Bielsa’s side slipped to their fourth defeat in five Championship matches.
“He’s an accident waiting to happen at the moment,” Whelan told Football Insider. “His body language is terrible and you can see the defence are losing confidence in him, they’re fearful and thinking, ‘can we trust him anymore?’.
“There have been too many soft goals, big errors, going back to the Cardiff game in December.
“They’re schoolboy errors, you shouldn’t be expecting that from a Real Madrid number two over his career.
“I know everyone’s prone to mistakes but these are really bad mistakes and ones you wouldn’t expect to see at under-23 levels at times.
“For the goalkeeper in a team chasing promotion to the Premier League, his decision-making and quality has got to be so much better.”
Casilla has been an ever-present for the Whites this season, starting in all 31 of their league matches.
His form was impeccable in the opening months of the campaign as Leeds opened up a big gap in the automatic promotion places.
But he has conceded 19 goals in the team’s last 10 league games, stretching back to the 3-3 draw against Cardiff in mid-December.
