Leeds United sent relegation warning after source reveals advanced Joe Gelhardt talks - pundit

Leeds United must make more “quality” signings before the transfer window shuts if they are to avoid a relegation battle this season.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after an update on Joe Gelhardt’s future.

Sources told Football Insider on 16 July that the striker is now in advanced negotiations with Leeds over a new contract.

The 20-year-old’s current terms expire in the summer of 2024 after he signed a four-year deal when he moved from Wigan Athletic two years ago.

He scored twice and provided a further four assists in 20 Premier League games, including five starts, as he played a key role in Leeds’ narrow escape from relegation.

McLeish is a fan of Gelhardt but warned Leeds still need more quality signings through the door before the transfer window shuts.

“Jesse Marsch has been there a few months now and he will certainly know what he sees in players,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild

“Gelhardt has been laterally in the Leeds team because of the injuries to Bamford. Bamford climbed mountains for Leeds, he overplayed himself.

“Gelhardt is a great young prospect. The fact Marsch has been there, seen him, got him in the team, he has something to offer.

“They obviously need a bit more quality just to keep them above that relegation pack. But the Gelhardt deal is a very decent addition, in terms of extending contracts.”

Gelhardt made his senior Leeds debut in the EFL Cup during the 2021-22 and now has 22 appearances across all competitions.

He played 21 times for Wigan before moving to Elland Road.
