Sources: Leeds set sights on signing powerhouse Soumare after £35m Newcastle bid

Leeds United are ready to join the race to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare this summer, Football Insider understands.

The ambitious Yorkshire giants are looking to recruit a top quality central midfielder who can provide cover and competition for Kalvin Phillips, Mateusz Klich and company.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leeds have set their sights on in-demand Soumare as a potential target.

The 21-year-old has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Lille and is regarded as one of the brightest talents in French football.

Soumare has also attracted interest from other top Premier League clubs over the last 18 months.

He has been linked with Man United and Leicester City, while he snubbed a move to Newcastle United in January of last year after they had a £35million bid accepted by Lille.

The financial troubles of French football could force the French high flyers to cash in on Soumare when he enters the last 12 months of his contract in the summer.

Soumare is a dominant midfielder enforcer who has been a key figure for table-topping Lille as they push for the league title this season.

He has made 16 Ligue 1 and Europa League starts among 29 appearances in all competitions for Lille this season.

Soumare started last Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League defeat to Ajax before being an unused sub in Sunday’s 4- Ligue 1 win over Lorient.

The former PSG academy product has made 73 appearances in total for Lille as well as secured four France Under-21 caps.
