Leeds United are set to continue holding off on offering Gaetano Berardi a new deal while their promotion bid is up in the air, Football Insider understands.
The Switzerland international, 31, is out of contract in the summer and has been free to agree a pre-contract with an overseas club since last month.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that the club have no immediate plans to hand Berardi an extension as they wait to see how their campaign pans out.
Berardi revealed in December he did not know if he would get a new deal but is keen to discuss the possibility of extending his six-year spell at the club.
This comes after Football Insider revealed back in October the club would adopt a ‘wait-and-see’ approach to the future of the versatile defender.
Much will depend on whether Leeds are playing in the Premier League or the second tier next season.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have suffered a series of damaging defeats over the last two months to leave their automatic promotion hopes up in the air.
Berardi has barely figured in that time and has not added to his 15 league appearances this season since late December.
Nine of those have come in the starting XI, as a replacement at centre-back for Liam Cooper when he’s been injured.
He was on the bench once again in today’s 1-0 Championship win against Bristol City at Elland Road.
Bielsa is a big admirer of the Swiss, who is a cult hero among supporters for his heart-on-the-sleeve commitment and aggressive playing style.
The Leeds manager spurned the opportunity to bring in additional centre-back cover either last summer following the shock sale of Pontus Jansson to Brentford or in the January window.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to announce a blockbuster deal this month after extensive negotiations.
