Whelan: Forget Bamford joining Liverpool as their fans want a much bigger name
Liverpool will not move for Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford this summer as their fans will expect a more high profile capture.
That is according to ex-Leeds ace Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Athletic reported that Liverpool “admire” the 27-year-old.
The report also claims that Leeds quietly triggered an extension clause in Bamford’s contract last summer, taking his current deal beyond 2022.
Bamford has 22 goals contributions (15 goals, 7 assists) in 36 top-flight matches this season.
But Whelan claims that his numbers won’t be enough to win over the Anfield faithful who will be desperate for a blockbuster addition.
“It’s one season. He’s got to do it again,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“It’s okay getting 15 goals but if you emulate that next season them maybe there’s more of a case for it [Liverpool move].
“But it’s very difficult for players to concentrate on a move away when there’s so much going on and you have to get this season out the way.
“Would he fit Liverpool? I think he would because they play quite similar football to what we do.
“The only question is, would the fans want a little bit more? That’s the problem. Are they wanting a bigger name? They probably will be.
“Either way, I’m sure Leeds won’t be taking any offers at the moment for Patrick Bamford.”
Leeds beat Burnley 4-0 on Saturday to move into the top half of the table.
Bamford started that match as he has every single one of Leeds’ 36 top-flight fixtures this season.
