Gelhardt should get extended Leeds run after surprise reveal - pundit
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Joe Gelhardt should start ahead of Tyler Roberts in the Leeds United starting XI.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker admitted he does not understand why Gelhardt is not starting games at the moment.
Leeds Live reported yesterday (3 January) the 19-year-old is the most prolific teenager in Europe’s top five leagues this season in terms of goals, assists and penalties won.
The England Under-20 international averages a goal, an assist or a penalty every 76 minutes in the Premier League.
That may come as a surprise given Leeds’ struggles in front of goal this season with only Wolves, Southampton and the bottom three scoring fewer goals.
Gelhardt’s latest contribution came in the 3-1 win over Burnley at the weekend as he provided the assist for Dan James to score the Whites’ third goal with a brilliant cross.

“I don’t get why he’s not starting,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“I don’t know why he’s not starting and Roberts is. I’m sure the Leeds fans feel the same, their reaction when he came on was a roar.
“Maybe that’s something where they change it and Gelhardt starts the next game.”
Gelhardt has now played nine times across all competitions for the Leeds United first team this season, including seven Premier League games of which two were starts.
The Merseyside-born star now has one goal and three assists to his name in the top-flight.
In contrast, Roberts has two goals and three assists in 46 Premier League games for Leeds.
