Whelan tells Leeds to sign midfield duo after official contract news
Leeds United need strength in depth and must sign another midfielder and number 10 this summer.
That is according to ex-Whites forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Leeds announced on 8th June that Roberts had signed a new deal until 2024.
Roberts, 22, featured 27 times in the Premier League last term but just 14 of those appearances were starts.
Rodrigo Moreno, Stuart Dallas, Kalvin Phillips and Mateusz Klich are the Welshman’s main competitors for midfield places.
But Leeds need more numbers in the middle of the park and behind the striker, according to Whelan.
“Regardless of the Roberts situation, I still think we need midfield players and that will never change,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“Even though Klich finished the season strongly, we need more competition in those areas, more experience and a different kind of midfield player.
“Dallas is the most attacking one out of the lot that we have. He had a very, very good season but I do believe that it’s a long season and we need to rotate.
“We also need someone that can come in and fit into that attacking role if Dallas needs to fill in another position.
“We are still a little bit bare in midfield and in that number 10 role so, look, go out and get them.”
One midfielder linked with a move to Elland Road recently is Fulham’s Harrison Reed.
