Kevin Campbell has claimed the signing of Chris Wood could free up Rodrigo Moreno to thrive even further in a number ten role at Leeds United.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 31-year-old New Zealand international is exactly what the Whites are needing.

Sources told this site on Saturday (3 December) that Leeds United are weighing up a January bid for Newcastle United forward Wood.

The Whites could now turn to the loan market to provide an alternative to the injury-plagued Patrick Bamford and in-form forward Rodrigo.

Bamford has managed just four top-flight starts this term - with Rodrigo stepping up to provide nine Premier League strikes, already his highest-ever tally.

Wood has been used sparingly since joining Newcastle earlier this year - scoring four goals in 33 appearances.

He cost the mega-rich Magpies a reported £25million but only has a contract running until June 2024.

Campbell suggested his signing would give Rodrigo a new lease of life in the second half of the season.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Someone like Wood coming in would be a very good piece of January business.

“He knows the league, he’s Premier League proven – and he’s very rarely injured, which is important.

“That would give them a bit more of a focal point. Although Rodrigo has done pretty well in that striker role, adding a Wood will free up Rodrigo to do other things in that number 10 role.

“Chris Wood has scored goals wherever he’s gone, and that’s exactly what they are needing.”
