Noel Whelan delivers 'devastating' Phillips verdict as Leeds update issued
It would be “devastating” for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips if he missed out on England’s Euros squad through injury.
That is according to ex-Whites forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the injury Phillips sustained in yesterday’s 3-1 win over West Brom at Elland Road.
Leeds have since announced that they are treating Phillips “conservatively” but “remain confident he will be available for Euro 2020, if selected.”
Gareth Southgate announces his 26-man England squad tomorrow and Phillips, an England regular over the last 12 months, will hope to be included.
Whelan admitted he “feared the worst” for the 25-year-old’s England ambitions after what he saw while attending Sunday’s match.
He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “That was the only sour note from yesterday’s game.

“The injury right at the end of the game looks like a repetition of the shoulder injury he had earlier in the season as well.
“But you can see when he was coming off the field that he was distressed and in a huge amount of pain.
“All we can do now is hope that it isn’t as bad as we thought at the time. The scans will hopefully show that it might just be a couple of weeks and he can get back training again.
“On the other hand, you look at the challenge and the pain that he was in and I can only fear the worst that the Euros is out of reach for him.
“It’s such a devastating end to the season for Kalvin. He’s one of the best in the Premier League in his position.”
