Leeds 'not happy' with Man United legend after his Calvert-Lewin claim
Leeds United are not happy with Michael Owen after he tipped Man United to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin, sources have told Football Insider.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the season at Elland Road and scored twice in Leeds' 4-1 win against Newcastle last time out, earning high praise.
He has now been included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad, while becoming only the second Leeds player to score in five consecutive Premier League games at Elland Road.
As I revaeled on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Leeds should be praised for the role they have played in getting Calvert-Lewin back to his best.
This comes after Owen insisted a "bigger team" should have signed the striker when he was available, rather than letting him go to Leeds, with Man United tipped as suitors.
However, Leeds took the gamble on bringing him in from Everton on a free transfer, and are now reaping the rewards as Calvert-Lewin is thriving under Daniel Farke.
How do Leeds feel about Dominic Calvert-Lewin's future?
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider in May that Leeds are delighted with Calvert-Lewin and the job he has done, and could reward him with a new contract.
The striker's current deal at Elland Road is set to run until 2028, placing the club in a strong position, but they have been tipped to tie his future down long-term.
Amid rising interest in his performances, leading to recognition at international level and tips for a potenital move away, Leeds will dismis any suggestions of a sale.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I don't think there's any suggestion that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could leave Leeds right now.
"Leeds aren’t too happy with Michael Owen's comments probably in that respect because it was Leeds that gave Calvert-Lewin the chance on a free transfer.
"They took a gamble on him when he left Everton and he's really repaid them, he's been outstanding for them since he arrived.
"The key for Calvert-Lewin has always been about staying fit, he showed his potential when he was fit at Everton and he's managed to maintain that since he joined Leeds.
"So I don't think there's anything right now to the suggestions that he could move on, or that so-called 'bigger teams' could make a move for him."
Could Man United make a move for Calvert-Lewin?
Before Leeds completed the signing of Calvert-Lewin last summer, he was linked with a number of different Premier League clubs given his status as a free agent.
The likes of Newcastle United and Aston Villa were both believed to be keen on the striker, while recent tips for a move to Man United have come from their initial interest.
Wyness told Football Insider last summer that Man United were eyeing Calvert-Lewin to bolster their attacking options and were heavily considering making a move.
Concerns about his fitness ultimately meant they did not move foward with a move, and it was Leeds who took the gamble and have helped him find his best form again.
While the Red Devils and his other long-term suitors may now be regretting their decisions, he continues to go from strength to strength at Leeds, who have no plans to lose him.
