Nico Elvedi has opened the door for a move to Leeds United as they step up their efforts to agree terms, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old has been a long-term target for Leeds as Daniel Farke aims to bolster his defensive options as part of their ambitious summer transfer plans.

He has been a key part of the Switzerland side the made it to the World Cup quarter finals, but following their defeat to Argentina, talks over his future at club level could accelerate.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Elvedi would be open to a move to Leeds United this summer and is hopeful of an agreement.

The centre-back has one year remaining on his contract at Borussia Monchengladbach, and the club are prepared to listen to offers as they are resigned to his exit.

Leeds are well-placed to get a deal done after seeing an opening offer rejected, and are now expected to return with a fresh bid in the near future.

Will Leeds United make a new move for Nico Elvedi?

Football Insider revealed on 10 June that Leeds are pushing to agree terms with Borussia Monchengladbach over a deal for Elvedi in the coming weeks.

Farke is expected to play a key role in negotiations, as he enjoys a strong relationship with the centre-back after working with him during his time at the Bundesliga club.

Elvedi, meanwhile, is believed to be keen to play in the Premier League as he prepares to leave Monchengladback following Switzerland's exit from the World Cup.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "There's been talk that they've had one offer rejected by Monchengladbach already this summer.

"Elvedi would be somebody who would be a good fit for Leeds because obviously Daniel Farke has worked with him previously at Borussia Monchengladbach.

"Elvedi, if the opportunity was to come along, I'm sure he would be interested in a move to the Premier League and Leeds United as well.

"He's got one year left on his contract, and Monchengladbach will be keeping a close eye on his performances at the World Cup to raise his price tag in that respect.

"But the German club are resigned to the player moving on this summer due to his contract situation.

"But the worry for Leeds will be is if he continues to impress for Switzerland that other teams might come to the table for him as well."

Why do Leeds want to sign Elvedi?

Leeds' pursuit of Elvedi has come as they aim to bolster their squad after a strong season in the Premier League, with a number of key positions now on their radar.

Farke has been outspoken with his demands for the board to back him in the transfer market, and following Pascal Struijk's move to Brighton, signing a new centre-back is key.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 2 July that Leeds are prepared to spend big money on a replacement for Struijk in the near future.

The 26-year-old had been a key part of the Leeds side, but with just 12 months left on his contract, the decision was made to cash in on him for a fee of £20million.

That money is now expected to be reinvested into the squad, with a number of potential replacements already on Leeds' radar.
