Stefan Borson reveals if Leeds can meet Daniel Farke's transfer demands

Published on

Leeds United face a "difficult" task of complying with financial rules while attempting to keep Daniel Farke from walking away.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Leeds' lack of outgoings so far could cause an issue at Elland Road.

The Whites have yet to officially begin their summer transfer business, but likely to the joy of the Leeds boss, rumours around star players continue to swirl.

Harry Wilson appears set to join the 'Welsh Mafia' at Elland Road, with serious interest ramping up in Southampton's Shea Charles, formerly of Man City.

Last summer, Leeds spent in excess of £100million, but Farke has demanded for more from 49ers Enterprises, threatening to walk away if disappointed.

Given the club's position in the Premier League, the boss could very much be left wanting more, but Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) could be their saviour.

Leeds United and Daniel Farke face 'difficult balance' with transfers

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson stated that Leeds simply must get their transfer business right, or risk being relegated to the Championship again.

It's just a difficult balance that they've got there. They're obviously in this phase where they're building up the revenue," he said.

"And they've got the leeway of SCR, which will give them quite a bit of leeway because they'll have 85 per cent that they can spend.

"They've got the Red Bull sponsorship, which is relatively lucrative. So they're all moving in right direction, but they've just got to get that balance right in terms of what they spend.

"They've got players that they probably don't want too. And if you're not selling and you're not bringing in profit on player trading sales, then everything's just much harder.

"So it's really about getting that balance right. It's about bringing in enough quality so that they're not in relegation trouble next season."

Who could Leeds cash in on this summer?

Both Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow are set to leave Elland Road, while Leeds still need to find new homes for Sebastiaan Bornauw and Max Wober.

Ao Tanaka could also be a surprise departure despite his incredible end to the season, and his World Cup campaign is only likely to boost his price tag.

The likeliest next exit is Joe Gelhardt. He was fantastic for the Championship outfit last season, notching 15 goals and five assists in 44 games.

And it's not just Hull City who are interested. Leeds will be praying for a transfer battle to emerge for the winger's signature, and these potential outgoings will be just as important as the incomings.
