Leeds United's response to Lukas Nmecha swoop revealed

Leeds United will not entertain a sale of striker Lukas Nmecha unless they can get a replacement in within days, sources have told Football Insider.

The German is subject to surprise interest from Championship side Wrexham, who are plotting an ambitious move to sign the Whites’ star. 

The West Yorkshire outfit are not actively looking to sell the 27-year-old, and are set to make it “difficult” for Wrexham to meet their valuation. 

Daniel Farke is in no doubt that the former Wolfsburg man cannot leave without a new face coming in, as he is currently the only backup option for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds offloaded Joel Piroe to West Ham earlier in August, and that deal has since left them down to the bare bones in the striker department. 

They are in no rush to sell Nmecha as a result, as there is a feeling that he will be needed at Elland Road throughout the campaign. 

Lukas Nmecha has key role to play at Leeds

Nmecha impressed at times during his debut Premier League campaign last term, as he managed to score six goals from just 10 starts for the Whites. 

His place as Calvert-Lewin’s understudy is undoubted, but he could yet play a very important role in Farke’s squad as the season wears on. 

Leeds have been keen to add support in front of goal for Calvert-Lewin since the start of the summer, but are running out of time to get a new option through the door. 

With that in mind, the burden is likely to fall on the likes of Nmecha, Noah Okafor and Harry Wilson to provide a further goal threat.

Leeds are aware that they cannot solely rely on Calvert-Lewin’s goals to help them progress up the league table, and as a result, they have little interest in showing Nmecha the door.

Leeds set sights on Jake O’Brien

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Leeds and Crystal Palace have both registered their interest in Everton defender Jake O’Brien ahead of the deadline. 

The versatile 25-year-old can play at both centre-back and right-back, and missed just one Premier League game in the entirety of last season.

However, sources have indicated that the Toffees are not willing to allow O’Brien to leave the club until they can get a right-back through the door. 

The right side of the defence has been a problem position for them throughout the 12 last months, and O’Brien is one of few makeshift options available to them.
