Leicester City news: Agbonlahor issues 'devastating' James Maddison claim after 'rumours' he's heard
James Maddison may not get into the England World Cup squad despite his superb Leicester City form because of his attitude when working with Gareth Southgate previously.
That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England attacker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “rumours” surrounding Southgate’s continued absence from England squads.
The 25-year-old has six goals and four assists in 12 Premier League games this term but has not made an England squad since he won his solitary cap in November 2019.
He admitted to Sky Sports on Saturday (5 November) that England is on his mind as Southgate is expected to name his 26-man World Cup squad on Thursday (10 November).
“I think he deserves to be in there but I just don’t think he will,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.
“There’s a rumour that Gareth Southgate had him in the Under-21s and didn’t like his attitude. I’m not sure if that’s true.

“There is something that he doesn’t like.
“There was the incident where he was in the occasion after he had been pulled out of the squad. I don’t know if it is that.
“There’s something that’s stopping Gareth Southgate. Any other manager in the world, Maddison makes their squad.
“I feel it’s crazy not to put him in.
“But he might look at and think ‘I want Foden, Mount, Grealish in front of him’.
“I would put him in there and feel it would be devastating he’s not in there but I just don’t think he will.
“You can take him with one cap, that shouldn’t matter, to be honest.
“Gareth Southgate hasn’t picked him in so long, I just don’t think he’s going to be pressurised by the media.
“He’ll go out on his own sword. If he doesn’t do well and everyone says ‘Maddison should have been in the squad’ then I think he’d rather that than pick him.
“There was an agenda against Grealish and he didn’t pick Grealish for ages. I think Maddison is the new Grealish.”
