Leicester City news: Insider moots James Maddison replacement after injury latest

Leicester City star James Maddison still has a chance of playing a significant role for England despite his injury struggles.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis, speaking exclusively to Football Insider

Maddison has not trained with the group since they flew out to Qatar and was the only player not named in the squad for England’s 6-2 win over Iran on Monday (21 November).

The 25-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the squad after winning his solitary England cap back in 2018.

“He absolutely has hope [of playing],” Dinnery told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“The expectation would have been that James Maddison would be in a position to feature for England at some point in these group stage games.

“Ideally, he would look to get minutes from the bench in this group phase and then, if needed, he would be able to come into the starting XI or play more of a role from the bench in the latter stages of the tournament.

“If that wasn’t the case, then the decision would have been taken to maybe look to bring somebody else in place of Maddison in that 26-man squad.

“The fact he played a part for Leicester City against West Ham at the end of that Premier League block, which seems like a lifetime ago but wasn’t even two weeks ago, means it’s not like Kyle Walker who will need game and minutes to get that sharpness.

“Maddison has been on the sidelines for a very short period so his transition from the sidelines to the team will ultimately be a lot quicker.”
