Supercomputer rates Leicester City's relegation chances after dire start in League One
Leicester City’s dire start to the 2026-27 campaign continued on Saturday as they were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against MK Dons.
Despite being one of the favourites to get promoted this season, Russell Martin’s side are now without a victory in their first three matches in the third tier.
As a result, the club has now dipped down to 20th in the table, and are only above the drop zone on goal difference.
This is despite the Foxes playing two of their four promoted sides in their opening three matches, as well as relegation favourites Burton Albion.
Therefore, many supporters are now fearful of a third consecutive drop, especially considering the club’s current financial woes.
However, Opta does not believe that relegation into League Two is likely this season.
Leicester are only outsiders to be relegated from League One
According to Opta on 29 August, Leicester are highly unlikely to be relegated this season.
The club is predicted to finish 11th in the table after their dire start to the 2026-27 campaign.
The supercomputer believes that the club has just an 8.76 per cent chance of ending the campaign in the bottom four, despite their current form.
In fact, the Foxes have a stronger chance of finishing inside the playoffs, with these odds currently at 20.30 per cent.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Leicester can turn their current form around, or if they will truly be in a relegation battle this season.
Are Leicester in trouble?
Unfortunately for Leicester, the stats do not look good for them.
Opta believes that the club is around about where they should be after three matches, given their performances.
Their expected position at the moment is 17th, with an expected points total of 2.3.
While this is an improvement on their current predicament, it is not a good look, especially considering the fixtures they have had.
With Plymouth Argyle up next on Tuesday, this clash may already be a must-win game for both Martin and Leicester to prove to the fans that they are still capable of winning promotion.
However, if it ends in another defeat, the Foxes could easily find themselves in trouble this campaign.
