Russell Martin: Everything Leicester fans need to know about his time at Rangers as deal agreed
Russell Martin looks poised to return to the managerial dugout with Leicester City after being sacked by Rangers.
The Scottish manager has reportedly reached an agreement with the Foxes over becoming their new head coach as they look to return to the Championship next season.
Fans at the King Power Stadium have endured a tumultuous time over the last two seasons, witnessing back-to-back relegations, and the former Southampton boss looks to be Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha's choice to bring success back to LE2.
Martin's reputation has taken a massive hit over the last few years, and his dismissal from Rangers after just four months in charge during the 2025-26 campaign certainly won't be encouraging for Leicester fans.
The 40-year-old head coach lasted just 123 days in the Ibrox dugout despite being backed by multiple signings during the transfer window.
Martin failed to bring the best out of his squad at the Glaswegian outfit, which certainly wasn't that bad since Danny Rohl managed to bring stability to the Govan side after replacing him.
Rangers fans left hopeless after Russell Martin failure
Martin holds the record for the shortest tenure as a permanent manager in Rangers' history, as he failed to win the opening five games in the William Hill Premiership.
The Gers went off to their worst start in the league in 42 years under the former Scotland international, with his possession-based footballing philosophy failing miserably in Govan.
Scottish football's physically dominant style was too much for Martin to handle and his idealistic approach eventually led to his dismissal.
The Glaswegian outfit's high-line and counter-pressing approach under the former Southampton boss failed to work and they were too easy to play through.
Martin also had a falling-out with one of the Govan side's best players, Nicolas Raskin, at the start of the season, which only made him more unpopular among supporters.
Russell Martin to face League One realities at Leicester City
According to Sky Sports on 15 June, Martin has agreed a deal to become the new head coach and will sign a three-year contract at King Power Stadium.
Sources told Football Insider on 15 June that Leicester have told Martin they will need to sell players like Abdul Fatawu, Ben Nelson and Jannik Vestergaard to raise funds after relegation.
The former defender began his managerial career with MK Dons in League One, making a name for himself in English football, but it remains to be seen whether he can steady a sinking ship in the East Midlands.
