Leon Osman has issued a stern reminder to Everton striker Romelu Lukaku by telling him “no player is bigger than the club”.
The 23-year-old recently refused to sign a new contract with the Goodison Park outfit with his future at the club now coming into question.
On the field of play, Lukaku has been a key player for manager Ronald Koeman, who is searching for European football in his first season in charge.
Lukaku is currently the top scorer in the Premier League with the Belgian finding the back of the net on 23 occasions from 31 matches.
Former Toffees midfielder Osman had his say about the contract rebel and what the club should do with the player.
“In an ideal world they’ll keep Romelu Lukaku,” Osman told Sky Sports. “You’ll keep the goals he’s scoring and you try to build a team around him.
“You need a good goalscorer to move up the league. You need a guy who’s going to score 20 plus goals a season to be near the top and at the moment he’s doing that.
“If he was to turn around and say he is leaving and demands to leave, the club will move on. No player is bigger than the club.”
During the club’s previous match, Lukaku netted a brace as Everton went on to secure a 4-2 win at home to Leicester.
Lukaku has scored 11 goals in his last nine matches and with six games of the season remaining for Koeman’s side, he will be looking to target 30 goals.
Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who have not won an away fixture this term, will be their next opponents at Goodison Park.
That match will be followed by an away trip to the London Stadium where they will take on West Ham before the Toffees host league leaders Chelsea at the end of the month.
Positive results from those matches could see Koeman’s side secure a top six finish in the table.
