Daniel Levy has abandoned hope of tying Toby Alderweireld down to a new deal and he will be sold in the summer, according to a report.
The Evening Standard claims the two sides are too far apart, with Alderweireld looking to more than treble his £50k-a-week wages.
Levy won’t sanction this, with Harry Kane currently the highest-paid player on £100k-a-week, and Mauricio Pochettino will now sell him in the summer.
Tottenham fans were hopeful that a deal might be possible after Alderweireld made his Premier League return in the 1-1 draw with Brighton on Tuesday night, but Davinson Sanchez is expected to return for the FA Cup semi-final with Man United on Saturday.
Pochettino has been playing hardball with Alderweireld and this is set to continue before his exit in the summer.
Sanchez is his readymade replacement, but fans might have justification for being concerned that he’s not ready to fill the void quite yet.
Football Insider verdict:
While there’s hope, there’s hope, but most Tottenham fans will know that Alderweireld’s appearance last night was one of convenience for Pochettino, not a sign that he’s back in the fold. Actually, his appearance could turn out to be inconvenient for Pochettino, who the fans have huge respect for. He’s been citing fitness and form as the reason he’s not been playing, but Alderweireld proved last night that he’s as sharp and fit as ever. One thing fans don’t appreciate is being lied to and Pochettino might be advised to either put up or shut up about Alderweireld if the player comes up in future media briefings.
