Levy time: Tottenham eye sensational late striker swoop for Pochettino favourite - report
By Dominic Toner
Tottenham are waiting in the wings to make a deadline day move for Southampton attacker Jay Rodriguez, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the 27-year-old is set to hold showdown talks about his future at Southampton, with the Saints on the verge of signing Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini for £17million.
It is said that Spurs are eyeing a late move for Rodriguez to test Southampton’s resolve.
The report details that Mauricio Pochettino is a big admirer of the attacker after previously working together at St Mary’s Stadium.
Long-standing Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is renowned for pushing through deadline day transfers out of the blue, a trait which has led supporters to christen the final day of the window ‘Levy time’.

The north London club signed Moussa Sissoko last August from Newcastle for £30million minutes before the transfer cut-off after making a late swoop to beat Everton to his signature.
Rodriguez has been hampered by injury during his career, but has managed to avoid any setbacks this season.
The Englishman has made 23 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and supplying one assist.
He has found it difficult to cement his position in Claude Puel’s starting line-up, with the likes of Charlie Austin, Nathan Redmond and Shane Long also performing well this campaign.
Rodriguez is a versatile attacker that can be used on the wings, or played through the middle as a central striker.
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs could be about to make another stunning last-ditch move on deadline day and Rodriguez would certainly be a player that would add to the squad. There would certainly be more strategy to the move than the panic buy of Sissoko in the summer. Pochettino is a keen admirer of the Southampton forward and knows the strengths of his game after previously working with him. Spurs would choose to add to their frontline if they were to improve any area, with Harry Kane remaining the main source of goals. Vincent Janssen has struggled to make the desired impact, while Heung-Min Son has done a decent job when called up. However, Spurs certainly need a reliable alternative to Kane and Rodriguez has shown before he can score goals in England’s top-flight.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are preparing talks for an 18-year-old attacker.
