Ligue 1 club set to approach Arsenal for £12m defender - report

By Harvey Byrne

Bordeaux are set to approach Arsenal about re-signing Mathieu Debuchy, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim on their website’s live transfer-centre page that the Ligue 1 club would like to sign Debuchy on a permanent deal, but would be open to a loan if necessary.

The French full-back, who has three-years left on his Gunners contract, spent the second half of last season on loan at Bordeaux, but only made nine appearances due to injury.

His Arsenal career has largely been injury-ridden and the 30-year-old, who joined the north London side from Newcastle in a £12million move in 2014, may be looking to return to his home country.

The 27-time France international has made just 21 appearances during his Emirates stay and with the emergence of 21-year-old Hector Bellerin, as well as Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson in the squad, Debuchy finds himself quite far down the pecking order.

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season and they have already trimmed their squad of several experienced players, including Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky, while Wojciech Szczesny is closing in on another loan move to Serie A giants Roma.

In other Arsenal transfer news, the Gunners have contacted Inter Milan officials regarding a move for their midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.
