'Like a new signing' - Ibrox exclusive: Darren Bent reacts to significant Rangers development

Darren Bent says that Jermain Defoe will be “like a new signing” for Rangers after he agreed terms to make his loan from Bournemouth permanent this summer.

The former Aston Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that manager Steven Gerrard does not need to worry about losing Alfredo Morelos with his former teammate staying at Ibrox.

Rangers confirmed on Saturday that the veteran hitman had agreed a pre-contract agreement which will see him become a permanent Gers player this summer.

Bent says that keeping Defoe on board means that Gerrard is guaranteed to have a natural goalscorer on board next season, regardless of what happens with his Colombian hotshot.

“It’s fantastic because now they don’t have to worry about Morelos, if Morelos goes, fair enough but at least they’ve got someone there who can stick the ball in the net,” Bent told Football Insider.

“Defoe’s confirmed he’s going to be there next year and that’s almost like a new signing again because Morelos has been linked with so many clubs.

“If he does go, because I’m sure he has aspirations of playing in the Premier League, until they find somebody at least they’ve got someone there who can find the back of the net.”

Defoe has netted 16 goals in 29 appearances for the Glasgow giants this season, although only 14 of those outings have come in the starting XI.

He initially joined on loan from Bournemouth in January 19 and has netted at a rate of nearly a goal every two games.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Gerrard has told the club to sell a player who has been a world beater in training.
