Lingard tipped to snub rival offers and sign for West Ham after update - pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped West Ham to win the race to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United this month.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 29-year-old would be keen to return to east London after last season’s dazzling loan spell.

As reported by talkSPORT on Thursday (6 January), West Ham are set to reignite a move for Lingard this month, having cooled their hunt in the summer.

Lingard reportedly told the Irons he wanted to fight for his place at Old Trafford.

The report claims the £40million asking price also put the Hammers off.

Whelan insisted there would be plenty of interest in Lingard this month.

However, he suggested a return to the London Stadium would be too big a lure to turn down.

Asked if West Ham would be favourites for his signing, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. I think it’d be an easy transition because he has played there. He knows the manager and knows the players.

“Transition-wise, you’re not walking into a club blind. You know exactly what it’s all about. You know the training facilities, you know the manager, you know the players you’re going to be lining up with.

“That would be the easiest move for him and I can see him turning down other offer for West Ham. Saying that, it might be something else that tempts him.

“But when you’ve done so well at West Ham and you’ve got on well with the manager, you can never stop thinking about those times. That will be in the back of his mind straight away.

“The fact that they’re successful side right now, you’re not walking into a relegation fight, you’re not walking into a club is in disarray.

“You’re going into a squad that’s really healthy. All he would do is strengthen the side. Give them that extra boost to maybe finish the season even stronger.”

Lingard scored nine goals and contributed five assists in 16 appearances on loan at West Ham.

He has since started just twice in 12 appearances at Manchester United.
