Sources: Liverpool have agreed £40m Diogo Jota deal in 'huge' twist

Diogo Jota has agreed a new Liverpool deal worth nearly £150,000-a-week, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants announced earlier this week that the Portugese forward has penned a new five-year contract.

Jota, 25, has been rewarded with a “huge” pay rise, sources said, that catapults him into the second bracket of Anfield earners.

The highest paid player is Mohamed Salah, who agreed a new three-year contract in the summer worth around £350,000-a-week.

Jota’s deal runs until 2027 and is worth £39million in total.

The Portugal international initially committed to Liverpool for five years when signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £45m in 2020.

It has proved to be an outstanding signing for a club that has specialised during the Jurgen Klopp era in recruiting players of great potential and developing them into bona fide stars.

Jota, who can spearhead the attack or play wide on either flank, has scored 34 goals and provided nine assists from 85 Liverpool appearances.

His record last season was impressive, with his 27 Premier League starts yielding 15 goals and his 55 appearances in all competitions producing 21 goals and eight assists.

By extending his deal, the longevity of the new look forward line will be preserved as Jota, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz – all in their early or mid-20s – reduce the average age of Klopp’s attack with Salah and Roberto Firmino both having turned 30.

The forward is currently injured and will miss the start of the Premier League season when Liverpool kick-off against Fulham at lunchtime on Saturday.

He is stepping up his return to training after recovering from a hamstring injury.

In other news, Liverpool are working on “sensational” new signing as talks held.
