Liverpool backed to sign 'amazing' Wijnaldum replacement as intriguing picture emerges - Robinson

Liverpool will have Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans “right at the top of their list” to replace Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

That is the view of former Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about potential replacements for Wijnaldum, 30.

The Netherlands international said goodbye to Liverpool fans on Sunday after a highly-successful five years at Anfield.

Wijnaldum will leave as a free agent after he failed to come to an agreement on a new deal with the club.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Reds have set their sights on signing Leicester’s Tielemans this summer but face competition from Barcelona.

Speculation regarding Tielemans’ future intensified on Sunday after a fan pictured the midfielder ‘crying and doing a lap of honour’ after the Foxes’ 4-2 loss to Tottenham on the final day of the season.

When asked by Football Insider if Tielemans could fill the void left by Wijnaldum, Robinson said: “I really rate Tielemans.

“I think he is an amazing player and I’m sure he will be right at the top of Liverpool’s signing list to replace Wijnaldum. It will be a difficult job replacing Wijnaldum but Tielemans is certainly a player who would fit the mould.

“Liverpool are not exactly flush with cash though. They struggled to get centre-backs through the door in January so I doubt they will splash £100million in the transfer market.

“I’m not sure if they could fund a move for Tielemans. It will have to be another clever window from them.”
