Liverpool controversy is tip of the iceberg, ‘national protest’ could be planned: ‘It can’t go on forever’

Liverpool would have faced further fan protests had they not U-turned on their plans to increase ticket prices.

That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who thinks a national fan protest over ticket prices will happen.

Liverpool had announced that ticket prices would go up in line with the consumer price index for inflation over the next three seasons.

Following protests organised by fan groups, including an initiative not to spend money inside Anfield, Liverpool will freeze prices from the 2027-28 season.

Costs will still increase at Liverpool next season, but the Reds are not the only Premier League club to have asked for more money from their fans.

Liverpool ticket prices ‘coming under scrutiny like never before’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes all Premier League clubs need to be “sensible” when thinking about price rises.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that fans are feeling greater financial pressures, and he is expecting further protests to happen in the future.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “That’s one of the many things that we’ve called right [Liverpool’s price U-turn].

“We did say that was what we expected to happen, so we can take credit for that because it was so well-organised, and it would have escalated, and I think it will escalate into a national fan protest.

“Having seen what can happen at Liverpool, other clubs are going to see similar sort of situations crop up. It is getting to breaking point about the costs. It can’t go on forever.

“There’s got to be a sensible increase, whether it’s linked to inflation or something else that makes sense to people, because it’s so tight for people right now.

“Food prices are going up, petrol prices, we all know it. The cost of living and the season ticket may suddenly come under scrutiny like never before.”

Liverpool target PSG star after Luis Enrique snub

Liverpool’s strong finances mean the club will be able to spend heavily again in the summer transfer window despite their outlay of over £400million last year.

The club will need to replace the departing Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, whilst a new centre-back is also on their list of priorities.

Sources have told Football Insider that PSG forward Bradley Barcola has emerged as a target for Liverpool, whilst the 23-year-old will be offered a new contract by the French club to fend off the Reds’ interest.

Barcola only played his part off the bench in PSG’s two semi-final ties against Bayern Munich, and is not a guaranteed starter under Luis Enrique, leading to speculation over his future.
