Paul Robinson has tipped Liverpool to U-turn on selling Joel Matip in the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one expects the Reds will offer the 31-year-old a new contract on Merseyside.

Matip has entered the final 18 months of his contract at Anfield.

Sources told Football Insider on 5 February that Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for the centre-half in the summer.

It is understood that Nat Phillips will also be allowed to leave the club permanently in the next window.

When asked by Football Insider if the Reds should cash in on Matip given his contract situation, Robinson said: "You have to look at how much it would cost to replace a player like that.

"What can they get in instead of him? If they replace him with a better quality of player then yes, do it. But we know Liverpool have limited funds. They will struggle to replace a player like Matip on the cheap.

"He has been a top player over the past few season. Yes, he doesn't play every game because of his injury record but he has been a great player for Liverpool all in all.

"You would certainly have him in the stable as one of three or four centre-backs at the club. That is why I think will offer him a new deal."
