Liverpool fans destroy 23-year-old on Twitter after his display against Southampton

Emre Can was selected in midfield ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum as Liverpool crashed out of the League Cup on Wednesday night – and fans took to Twitter to pan his display.

The central midfielder, 23, played 77 minutes of the 1-0 defeat against the south coast side as Jurgen Klopp’s side lost the two-legged tie 2-0.

A second consecutive loss also ended Liverpool’s hopes of a second consecutive League Cup final appearance, with Southampton now to take their place at Wembley to face either Manchester United or Hull, who play in the other semi-final on Thursday night.

Can was named in a full-strength Liverpool side as he was given the nod to partner skipper Jordan Henderson in central midfield instead of Dutchman Wijnaldum.

Supporters were particularly frustrated by the performance of Germany international Can, with many claiming that he had underperformed for yet another match.

One fan questioned whether Can’s contract talks with the club – which have reached a stalemate with 18 months on his deal remaining – had played a part in his recent performances.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
