Liverpool senior star ordered to play for Under 23s - reliable journalist

By Matt Farr

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren will play for the Under 23s against Chelsea on Monday, according to a reliable journalist.

Telegraph reporter Chris Bascombe revealed on his personal Twitter account that the 27-year-old was set to feature for Liverpool’s reserve side in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of the clash with Manchester City at the weekend.

Lovren has not featured in any of Liverpool’s last five Premier League matches, and missed the 2-1 victory over Burnley on Sunday with a back injury.

The Croatia international had earlier been sidelined with a knee problem, but returned to training ahead of their Premier League meeting with Arsenal at the start of the month, where he was an unused substitute.

But he is set to build up his fitness ahead of another crucial encounter in Liverpool’s bid to finish in the Premier League’s top four, where they visit rivals Man City on Sunday.

He is set to feature for a Liverpool Under 23 side that are third in the table, and will be going up against fifth-placed Chelsea.

His potential first-team return at the Etihad at the weekend will be a welcome boost to Jurgen Klopp, who has seen his side struggle defensively in his absence.

Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine Premier League matches, with Klopp having to resort to fielding Lucas Leiva as a makeshift centre-back on several occasions.

In other Liverpool team news, Jamie Redknapp has compared this 23-year-old with Lionel Messi following the Burnley victory.
