Sadio Mane: This is why I am not concerned about Chelsea

By Emma Sanders

Sadio Mane has admitted he believes Liverpool have some “distance” to make up between themselves and Chelsea but he is confident they are capable of achieving it.

The 24-year-old has been excellent for Liverpool since joining from Southampton in the summer but he has scored just once in the last six games.

Jurgen Klopp’s side made a sensational start to the campaign, going 15 games unbeaten in all competitions between August and December before suffering a shock 4-3 defeat against Bournemouth.

Liverpool were unable to bounce back and dropped further points against West Ham last Saturday before returning to winning ways with a dominating 3-0 win at the Riverside stadium against Middlesbrough this week.

Liverpool currently trail Chelsea by nine points but they still have a game in hand against Everton in Monday’s much-anticipated Merseyside derby.

Mane dismissed concerns that the Premier League leaders were unstoppable after winning 11 league games on the trot.

“I think we have a bit of distance to Chelsea but we all know what can happen in football,” Mane told the club’s official website.

“For us, the most important thing is not to think about where they are, it’s to focus on ourselves and go game by game, and try to win the games until the end of the season.”

Victory for Liverpool on Monday could close the gap from Chelsea down to six points but Liverpool still have a testing fixture against Manchester City to play before the end of the year.

The Reds were victorious in the clash at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, defeating Chelsea 2-1, and Liverpool will host them at Anfield at the end of January.

It’s crucial Liverpool don’t drop any further points though, with Arsenal breathing down their necks and only goal difference separating the two teams.
