Simon Mignolet has been described as the “perfect” goalkeeper by Jurgen Klopp after signing a new five-and-a-half-year contract.
The Merseysiders announced on Monday afternoon that the goalkeeper has finalised an agreement with the club that is set to run until 2021.
Football Insider revealed last month that Mignolet was ready to commit to a new agreement that lifted his salary from £60,000-a-week to £80,000-a-week.
Mignolet, 27, has attracted criticism for several errors this season but Jurgen Klopp has consistently backed the Belgium international and gave new insight on Tuesday into why he sanctioned a new contract.
“We’ve thought about it all and in the end it is the package [and] Simon Mignolet is for us perfect because he is a smart guy, young enough to develop in the things he has to develop and he gives us all, the whole team, a good feeling when he is in the starting line-up, so that is really important,”said Klopp at his media conference ahead of the club’s FA Cup replay against Exeter..
“We are sure we want to work together with him for the next years, that’s why we offered him a new contract.
“He took it and now he is Liverpool FC player for the next few years. Hopefully I can think about the next contract too with him, then we would have had success.
Adam Bogdan has deputised for Mignolet on a few occasions but the former Bolton has made some glaring mistakes, most notably in the 2-2 draw at Exeter last Saturday and in the 3-0 defeat at Watford before Christmas.
Klopp took the surprise step of recalling youngster Danny Ward from his season-long loan at Aberdeen earlier this month and he was named ahead of Bogdan on the substitute’s bench for the Premier League matches against Arsenal and Manchester United last week.
