Paul Robinson has claimed Liverpool have "major problems" after Thiago Alcantara suggested the squad are physically and mentally exhausted.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the signing of a midfielder will not solve the Reds' season.

Jurgen Klopp's side lost further ground in the race for the top four after a goalless draw with Chelsea on Saturday (21 January).

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (22 January), Thiago revealed last season's exploits have had a "physical" and "psychological" impact on the players.

The centre-midfielder stressed the importance of taking the rest of the season "game by game."

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Liverpool's problems, Robinson said: "Liverpool's situation is not going to be solved by signing a midfielder.

"Too many players are underperforming. As a team, they are some way off it.

"Last season has taken its toll. We have to remember that they played in every game possible. The World Cup will not have helped either. It has been hard for them to get any kind of momentum.

"They have also had an incredible amount of injuries. To be missing the likes of [Virgil] Van Dijk and [Luis] Diaz... There is a lot of things that have added up.

"The signing of one midfielder will not cover a thousand holes. They are in mid-table for a reason. There is some major problems there now and they will not be fixed overnight."
