Phil Thompson: Klopp made this fatal error for Liverpool v Everton game
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson his criticised Reds manager Jurgen Klopp for his team selection against Everton and says he underestimated the importance of the Merseyside derby.
Klopp made six changes to the side that thrashed Spartak Moscow 7-0 in the Champions League in midweek and decided to leave key players Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino on the bench.
Sky Sports pundit Thompson feels that the German’s team selection was a mistake and shows both complacency and a lack of understanding.
“We, as Liverpool fans, have moaned about the rotation for a few weeks and it has come off previously, but this is a derby game. You play your best team in the derby,” he told Sky Sports.
“That selection worried me that he didn’t understand how big a game it was. He’s gone with a team to beat a mid-table team rather than win a derby game.
“If it was Manchester United he would have played a full-strength side, so it was maybe a bit of complacency as well as the rotation.”

Klopp has been criticised previously for failing to rotate his squad, but he has now made significantly more changes than any other Premier League manager this season.
Thompson feels that Klopp underestimated both the quality of the opposition and the magnitude of the game.
Liverpool dominated possession and created enough chances to win at Anfield on Sunday, but Everton took an unlikely share of the points after a second-half penalty from Wayne Rooney cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s opener.
The Reds remain in fourth place in the Premier League table, but missed the chance to move above third-placed Chelsea.
Klopp’s side face West Brom in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Wednesday, before they travel to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.
