Kieran Maguire: Liverpool right to be livid as legal proceedings over £4m payout begin

Liverpool had every right to expect better protection from insurers throughout the pandemic.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments behind the scenes at Anfield.

CityAM reported on Tuesday (17 May) that the Merseysiders are one of several clubs to file a multi-party lawsuit against six major insurers.

The clubs believe they are entitled to a larger payout from insurers for losses sustained over the course of the pandemic, which stripped away matchday income and made commercial streams less viable.

The coalition of clubs have begun legal proceedings in response to a landmark £4.4million payout received by restaurant chain Corbin & King from insurance firm AXA.

AXA are one of Liverpool’s primary sponsors.

And Maguire claimed that the Reds, whose Covid insurance payout has not been disclosed, have every right to expect top-quality cover from insurers.

“The whole point of business insurance is to provide some form of protection when there are exceptional circumstances,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“A global pandemic falls within that position. You can understand why Liverpool have taken the stance they have along with the other clubs.

“We have seen some clubs get around £2.5m which seems to be around the standard payout.

“What we have seen in terms of a recent legal ruling, there was a French restaurant chain that put in a claim with AXA. They had two close-downs do they said they should be able to make two claims.

“They ended up being awarded significantly higher than we have seen any of the football clubs get. That appears to have set a precedent.”
