Finance guru drops £150m Liverpool bombshell

Liverpool will be hit by a potential £150million bombshell if they finish outside the Champions League places this season.

That is according to finance guru and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Leicester City on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side could drop out of the top-four if they fail to beat Brendan Rodgers’ high-flying foxes.

Liverpool are averaging 1.7 points per game this season and are on track to pick up 66 across the 38-game campaign — Chelsea finished 4th last season with that exact tally.

Maguire says failing to qualify for the Champions League would be a disaster for Liverpool, but that failing to retain their Premier League crown is not the end of the world from a financial perspective.

“Their finances will not suffer significantly as a result of not winning the league,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“The important thing for them is Champions League qualification, that’s worth somewhere between £40m and £150m depending on how far you get in the competition.

“The difference between finishing 1st and finishing 2nd is less then £2m in prize money. You might get some sponsor bonuses, but it’s peanuts really.

“From a financial point of view, 5th vs 4th is far more important than 1st vs 2nd.”

Last season’s champions have taken just three victories in their last 11 matches across all competitions.

They haven’t won in their last five home matches in the league and suffered a 4-1 humbling at the hands of runaway leaders Manchester City on Sunday.
