Liverpool have approached Real Madrid with an enquiry about forward Karim Benzema, according to a report.
Spanish publication Diario Gol claims that Real president Florentino Perez has put Benzema, 30, up for sale in the summer transfer window and the reigning European champions may consider offering the France international plus Dani Ceballos in exchange for Anfield star Mohamed Salah.
It is understood that Madrid will “go after” the Egypt international in a few months.
The Sun has reported that Benzema has a jaw-dropping £890million release clause tied into his current £150,000-a-week deal at the Bernabeu, although it seems almost impossible that the ex-Lyon centre-forward would be moving for that amount of money.
He has made 33 appearances in all competitions this season for Los Blancos, but scored just eight goals and supplied nine assists.
Football Insider verdict
Spanish clubs always seem to put ridiculous release clauses in contracts of their players, but the game has been completely changed when Paris Saint-Germain were mad enough to meet the £198million clause in Neymar’s deal at Barcelona. That has probably led to clubs putting stupid price-tags on their release clauses to stop the likes of PSG from going transfer crazy. Liverpool cannot let Salah go in the summer though, even if it means that they get Benzema and Ceballas. The ex-Roma attacker is the best player to grace Anfield since Luis Suarez left and could be the key to them winning major silverware in the future.
In other Liverpool news, it has been confirmed that this Chelsea winger has moved to Anfield.
