Aston Villa and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old is poised to make his first start of the season in Wednesday’s League Cup clash against West Ham United after struggling for game time in the new campaign.

Gomez has started life under Arne Slot as a fringe player, with the new Liverpool boss preferring other options at centre-back and full-back.

Villa and Newcastle were both keen on signing Gomez during the summer transfer window, and there was also interest from top European clubs.

The England international is under contract at Anfield until 2027.

Aston Villa and Newcastle could provide Joe Gomez with regular game time

Gomez has yet to play a single minute of football in the Premier League this season, having only featured for 11 minutes in the Champions League.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have established themselves as the main centre-back pairing under Slot, which has led to limited opportunities for others in the squad.

Newcastle and Liverpool had held talks in the summer regarding Gomez being involved in a part-exchange deal featuring Anthony Gordon, but nothing was agreed between the clubs.

Liverpool

Gomez has been under contract with the Premier League giants since 2015 and has made 225 appearances for the club.

The centre-back has scored nine times for Liverpool and has showcased his versatility in playing all across the back line.
