Kieran Maguire: Liverpool may already have 'phenomenal' Edwards replacement ready to go

Liverpool will likely recruit from within if Michael Edwards leaves the club at the end of the season.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the “phenomenal” sporting director.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein reported on 30 August that Edwards is not expected to renew his contract when it expires next summer.

Edwards has overseen a glittering period of footballing success since joining Liverpool in 2016.

Julian Ward was promoted to the role of assistant sporting director in December 2020.

And Maguire anticipates that the Merseysiders will look among those already on the payroll when they come to choose Edwards’ successor.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Michael Edwards has been the invisible guiding hand under FSG’s stewardship.

“He’s done a brilliant job. He understands the business side of things and he understands the importance of identifying and keeping talent at the club.

“Somebody of his skill base is a rare gem to find. Liverpool have benefited significantly from his stewardship at the club.

“They are huge shoes to fill, but they’ve got phenomenal people there. If you are a good operator, you tend to surround yourself with good people.”

“You’d imagine they’d recruit from within because they have some very talented people at the club.”

Edwards played a leading role in Liverpool’s historic Champions League and Premier League triumphs in 2018-19 and 2019-20 respectively.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have picked up seven points from their opening three games in the league this season.
