Liverpool given major injury boost as midfielder returns to training ahead of Tottenham clash

By Coral Barry

Roberto Firmino has provided hope that teammate Lucas Leiva is close to returning to full fitness for Liverpool.

The Liverpool star has uploaded a series of pictures on his Snapchat during the club’s warm weather training camp in Tenerife and has shared a video of Lucas training on Friday.

Lucas, 29, has not featured for Liverpool since the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City on February 28th, but a clip Firmino sent out to his Snapchat followers showed the Brazilian putting in a gym session with other Reds players.

Lucas suffered a freak injury taking one of Liverpool’s penalties in the shoot-out loss to City and has been struggling with a thigh injury ever since.

But Firmino’s video has offered a glimpse into Lucas’ progress and was tagged with the caption ‘Lucas is back’.

Neither Brazilians were fit enough to be included in their country’s international fixtures over the next week and a half and flew out with Liverpool’s other non-international and injured players to Tenerife on Monday.

Firmino missed the 3-2 defeat to Southampton last weekend because of a hamstring injury, but has been keeping his followers constantly updated with his progress.

The attacker’s Snapchats have offered hope that his injury is not as bad as once feared and the Brazilian provided another update on his own fitness on Friday.

Jurgen Klopp will be hopeful to have both players back fit for the showdowns with Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund in the coming weeks.

Liverpool welcome league leaders Spurs to Anfield in a bid to get their top four push back on track on April 2nd and then must travel to Germany to compete their first leg with Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
