Liverpool news: Manager 'surprised' by Luis Diaz development - 'imagine trying to tell him'

Kevin Phillips is “surprised” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dropped Luis Diaz for the trip to Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker and current South Shields manager said he expected Diaz, 25, to start ahead of Sadio Mane at the Etihad given his form and the importance of the game.

Diaz produced a man of the match performance for the Reds in a 3-1 win over Benfica in the Champions League last Tuesday.

However, it was not enough to retain his place in the starting XI.

Diogo Jota was preferred to the Colombia international against Man City on Sunday and scored in a 2-2 draw.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the team selection, Phillips said:

“I think I’ve got it tough trying to pick a team but imagine having the forwards Klopp has got. Imagine trying to tell one of them they are not playing. It is a case of freshening it up and trying to keep everybody happy.

“It was a surprise to see Diaz on the bench though after he performed so well in midweek. The Man City game was the biggest of the season and Diaz has been one of Liverpool’s best players recently.

“I expected Jota would start but I thought he’d have Diaz in over Mane on the left-hand side.

“At the end of the day, whoever plays they are quality. Mane showed that with his finish. It was cool, calm and collected.

“I was surprised when the team sheets come out but as a manager, you have to try and keep everyone happy. You have to rotate.”
