Liverpool news: Pundit verdict on Roberto Firmino quitting after confirmed news

Roberto Firmino will see out the final 12 months of his contract at Liverpool despite the arrival of Darwin Nunez.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 30-year-old’s future on Merseyside.

Firmino has just one year remaining on his contract at Anfield.

The Brazil international fell down the pecking order last season following the arrival of Luis Diaz in January.

Liverpool announced the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica in an £85million deal including add-ons on Tuesday.

When asked by Football Insider if Nunez’s arrival would lead to Firmino’s departure this summer, Campbell said: “Look, you have got to look at the situation.

“It is changing times at Liverpool. Firmino has 12 months to go on his contract.

“He does not cause any trouble and he’s a good player to have in your squad. When you are rotating, he’s a good player to step in. He’d be a good backup for Nunez next season.

“I think he will see out the next 12 months of his deal and everyone will pat him on the back and say thank you very much. Make no mistake about it, he has been a star for that club.”

Firmino contributed 11 goals and five assists in 35 appearances in the 2021-22 campaign.

He joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in July 2015.
