Sources: Southampton being offered Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Southampton are set to be offered Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the January window, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder’s five-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield is coming to an end with his contract set to expire next summer.

Liverpool are willing to let Oxlade-Chamberlain go in the winter window, especially if they are able to succeed in buying the marquee midfielder that Klopp craves.

Southampton have been interested in re-signing their academy product in previous windows, with a potential loan deal mooted at one stage.

He will be offered to the south coast club as Liverpool begin the process of overhauling their ageing midfield.

The England international, who turns 30 next August, has slipped down the Anfield pecking order and injury has kept him out of team for most of this season.

He has made just four appearances in total, one start in the League Cup and three late substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Liverpool are not expected to offer Oxlade-Chamberlain an extension to his current agreement, as he is not regarded as a key player going forward by Klopp.

The manager omitted the versatile midfielder from Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the group stages, along with his fellow injury-plagued teammate Naby Keita.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has made 137 appearances for the Merseysiders during his six seasons at the club.

He stayed clear of injury last season but was restricted to just nine Premier League starts among 29 appearances in all competitions.
