Liverpool player ratings v Southampton: Two senior flops 4/10

By Dominic Toner

Football Insider rates the Liverpool players after their 1-0 defeat against Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday night.

Loris Karius 7 – He made two fantastic saves in the first-half from Nathan Redmond, blocking both efforts from the attacker’s shots inside the penalty area. Liverpool’s standout player in the game.

Nathaniel Clyne 5 – The right-back was not as involved as he normally is, with team-mate James Milner doing most of the attacking. Was caught out positionally in defence, could have done better with Nathan Redmond’s goal.

Dejan Logren 6 – Endured an uncomfortable return to St Mary’s as he was subject to jeers from the home supporters. Looked the most convincing Liverpool defender though on the pitch.

Ragnar Klavan 5 – The centre-back made a huge error in the build up to Nathan Redmond’s opening goal as he sliced a clearance, which allowed the Southampton attacker the goalscoring opportunity.

James Milner 6 – The converted left-back was a constant attacking threat for Liverpool and worked tirelessly up and down the flank. Made a few clumsy challenges though in defence.

Emre Can 4 – Over-complicated his play and was slow in possession. The German struggled to help going forward and had too many touches on the ball.

Lucas 5  – The central midfielder sat in front of the back four and made a few rash challenges. Will definitely be replaced by skipper Jordan Henderson though when he returns from a hell injury.

Georginio Wijnaldum 5 – He was sat too deep to influence the game in an attacking sense and was disappointing.

Adam Lallana 6 – He showed glimpses of his technical quality with some brilliant moments of skill. Unable to unlock the solid Southampton defence.

Daniel Sturridge 4 – The striker failed to make an impact in front of goal and was very much a passenger during the tie.

Roberto Firmino 5 – The Brazilian attacker has seen his form dip recently and once again lacked a threat. Saw one effort saved by the goalkeeper in the first-half.

Philippe Coutinho (for Wijnaldum 61mins) 6

Divock Origi (for Firmino 83mins) 6
