Liverpool player ratings v Sunderland: Midfielder is 4/10

By Dominic Toner

Football Insider rates the Liverpool players after their 2-2 draw against Sunderland in the Premier League clash.

Simon Mignolet 7 – The Goalkeeper made a couple of great saves during the game, can’t be blamed for either of Jermain Defoe’s penalties. Produced the best save of the match from a one-on-one with Defoe.

Nathaniel Clyne 6 – The right-back was less effective offensively that normal, but managed to contain Adnan Januzaj for the most part.

Dejan Lovren 6 – The defender was strong in the air and did his job well, still regarded as the club’s first-choice centre-back.

Ragnar Klavan 5 – Gave away a penalty for a clumsy challenge and was tested by the experienced Defoe.

James Milner 5 – Tested defensively by Fabio Borini and was withdrawn at half-time with a yellow card.

Adam Lallana 6 – He showed glimpses of his qualities on the ball and tried to support the attack, but faced a stubborn Sunderland defence.

Emre Can 4 – The defensive midfielder struggled to screen the defence and was caught in possession on several occasions by the Sunderland players. Struggled to get the high standards that the injured Jordan Henderson normally sets.

Georginio Wijnaldum 6 – The Dutchman delivered a steady performance in the centre of midfield without setting the world alight.

Sadio Mane 6 – His last game before he departs for the Africa Cup of Nations and had a mixed afternoon. Scored a decisive goal to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead, but gave Sunderland a second penalty with a handball which Defoe dispatched once again to ensure the points were shared.

Daniel Sturridge 8 – First Premier League start since October and was very impressive. Opened the scoring with a simple looped header and tested the goalkeeper on several occasions.

Roberto Firmino 6 – The Brazilian attacker failed to threaten the goal directly himself, but showed some nice link-up play. Will be relieved to have Philippe Coutinho back in team in the coming weeks.

Alberto Moreno (for Milner 45mins) 6

Divock Origi (for Wijnaldum 73mins) 6

Lucas (for Sturridge 80mins) 6
