Liverpool’s pursuit of Michael Keane could provide a possible £7million boost to Jose Mourinho’s summer transfer budget, according to a report.
The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United could pocket 25 per cent of his next fee thanks to a transfer clause in his £2.5million move to Burnley in 2015.
The 24-year-old earned his first senior international cap for England on Wednesday when he took part in the 1-0 friendly loss to Germany.
Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea are also involved in the four-way tug-of-war to sign the Burnley defender.
The Sun have previously reported that Sean Dyche would only consider letting his main centre-back go if he received an offer worth at least £28million.
Liverpool have struggled defensively this season and additions to the back-line appear to be paramount to Jurgen Klopp’s plans with the club.
However knowing that a great deal of their cash would go to their bitter rivals Man United, should the deal materialise, fans might not be pleased to know that their club have contributed to possibly strengthening Mourinho’s side.
Keane’s Burnley contract expires at the end of next season and he has recently rejected offers of an improved deal at Turf Moor.
He’s played in every single minute of the Clarets’ league campaign this season which has seen them climb up to 13th in the Premier League table.
Football Insider Verdict
Klopp has to invest in his defence in the summer after their underperformance this season. Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan aren’t the type of high-quality centre-backs that a club like Liverpool should have and the purchase of Keane could offer some much needed calmness to his side’s defending. The Reds are in such a desperate need of a top enforcer that the possibility of strengthening Manchester United’s transfer market manoeuvrability should not really be anything to concern them. However it could definitely be something fans would bring up to each other depending on how things go in 2017/18. One thing is for sure though, Keane’s debut international cap could bump up his transfer figure that bit more.
