Liverpool are convinced they can hijack Chelsea’s bid to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the transfer deadline, according to a report.

The Times claim that the Merseysiders believe they can “tempt” the Arsenal midfielder to move to Anfield even though he is in the advanced stages of a switch to west London.

It is said that Liverpool remain in the running and could make a late bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain after Arsenal accepted a £35million bid for the player from Chelsea.

The Times report that the 24-year-old will be given permission to undergo a medical at the England training centre, where he is on international duty.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been insistent that he wanted to keep the midfielder and described his player as the future of the club as recently as Friday.

But it is reported that the club’s stance has changed in the wake of their humiliating defeat at 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday and are now willing to let him go.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has snubbed a number of contract offers from the north Londoners as he looks to take advantage of his contract situation, which would allow him to leave on a free next summer or quit for a relatively cut-price fee.

Football Insider verdict:

This is shaping up to be quite a transfer battle. Oxlade-Chamberlain did not play like a £35million bargain in Arsenal’s wretched display at Anfield on Sunday, but it is easy to see why the two Premier League big guns want him. Versatile, mobile, technically excellent, English and with his best years ahead of him, he offers so much. The question is, where is his best position? Intriguingly, the Times report Liverpool plan to plan him in his favourite central or advanced role. At Chelsea, he might have to compete with Victor Moses for a go at right wing-back. Expect some twists and turns in this transfer in the coming days.
